Carol's Sunday Smorgasboard: July 7th

I have read a few fabulous bloggers I follow posting these Sunday Smorgasboard posts, and thought to myself today that I have had a delightfully random week - why not link up??

The highlight of the week was definitely celebrating the 4th of July with friends in the geekiest way possible. It was super rainy here in Georgia, yet we still stubbornly went swimming in the rain. Then, we gathered around the kitchen table for some geeky gaming time: we played an awesome Marvel super heroes deck building game called Legendary:

The scenario we played involved protecting a "baby" from the evil villians. To remember which villian had the "baby," we enlisted the help of this epic Transformer! Hehe!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE playing games with friends. Usually at some time while playing I think about how much I love teaching my kinders skills with fun games. Last year's group was all about the classic card game of "Go Fish!" We use the Saxon Phonics curriculum and the kids would play go fish where they matched picture cards to word cards. Simple? Yes. Fun? Absolutely!

In the spirit of gaming love, check out these links:

http://www.dltk-kids.com/games/go-fish.htm (rule ideas and some cards you can print out for different skills - and FREE!!)

http://www.carlscorner.us.com/WOW.htm : If you scroll down to the review weeks, there are "Go Fish" card sets for every 20 Dolch Words. I send these home with students to play with their parents and use them at school.
Finally, not free but how CUTE?? I might have to get a set of these for numbers:

PUGS in POLOS!

On Wednesday, Rosco the pug got his nails done. He is the biggest baby about nail grinding (can't say I blame him though, I'd spazz if you came after my nails with a Dremel grinder, too). After each successful nail grinding where success is defined as neither the pug or groomer bleeding, Rosco gets something new from the pet store. How do you like this polo?

One last ultra cute picture:

That's my baby sister! She just finished Kindergarten and my husband I took her out for Hibachi for her birthday. It was one of those hibachi grills where they cook in front of you:

And my sister just had this blank face of amusement? concern? I don't know, what do you think she's thinking:

EduBlog Nomination: HeidiSongs

Hi everyone! Sorry for my long absence - you know how busy teaching is! It's Thanksgiving Break now - so I have a wee little bit of time for myself! Woo-hoo! My first blog to-do: edublog nomination! This year I am nominating
Heidisongs for Best Educational us of audio/video/ visual/ podcast. In particular - I think the videos she posts are delightful and very, very useful in understanding the message of her blog.
While on the topic, I'd like to post a review of her dvd products that I received last summer. I have been using the Sing and Spell Dvd's for sight words with each of our 5 new words every week and my kids this year are doing WAY better on learning their sight words. They love the time we spent practicing them every day and are so disappointed the days we don't get to use the music to practice. Their absolute favorite is the "his" song - the honking all the way through plus the crash at the end is hysterical to them! Then, there is the Letter and Sounds DVD that we use every day when we do phonics. I have many students who already know their alphabet and all or nearly all of the letter sounds -woo-hoo! We use Saxon Phonics, which is a letter-a-week approach - so them knowing so much more of the alphabet then what that curriculum covers is amazing! We have used the Numbers and Shapes DVD too, which was fun for them and worked just as well. I really ought to go through the Little Songs for Language Arts and the Musical Math DVD and plug the songs into my curriculum map so I remember to include them in lesson plans and use these more. One problem I have encountered is that my poor computer in my classroom has been freezing and failing on me since school started, which makes using the dvd's tough. Switching between them, especially the sight word dvd's, can be a pain too. Any suggestions for that? I love the dvd format, but it's too much to load them all on my crappy computer.
So, overall, these dvd's are a tremendous educational resource! I'll have to make a post at the end of the year with the average # of sight words learned- maybe compared to last year if I can find that data! How cool would that be?

A Letter to a Blogger I Admire: Heidi at Heidisongs!

Dear Heidi,

I have followed your blog, Heidisongs Resource, for one year now, beginning a month or so into my first year of teaching. What appeals to me about your blog is how you describe what is happening that week in your classroom through your descriptions and your pictures. This is an awesome thing - because what your kids are learning lines up pretty well with what my kids are learning! To really put a cherry on top - you so kindly include freebies every single week! You also clearly link to other resources, so it's easy to go find other things that may be useful.
So, you give me ideas I can implement immediately, and the tools to use them. This is extremely helpful!

I also appreciate the consistency of your blog. The Saturday morning weekly posting time is a great time to indulge in some blog reading for me, while my mind is resting and not yet going crazy with things to do for the following week. Good timing rocks!

I wish wish wish I could afford all your dvd's and lots of your resources. I love your games in particular! I used some of your Bang! games last year and number and addition activities. For the coming year, I just bought your Sing and Spell DVD #2 that includes color words. I figure that if my kids quickly master all the words on that, more easily than others are mastered, I can use this as proof to my Principal that she should purchase more of your products for the whole Kindergarten team! I hope this works!

Many many thanks to you for your great blog! I look forward to many more Saturday mornings reading it!

Thanks for visiting my blog!
